“Hells bells!” I couldn’t believe anyone was able to get inside Mara’s house. The front door was open, and I could hear fighting inside. Plus, I thought I saw a mage go around the side of the garage, or at least I saw the trailing end of a dark robe, similar to what a mage normally wears.

“Mara!” Alyson yelled and ran inside the house without even waiting for me.

“Alyson, slow down. We have to be careful since we don’t know how many are here,” I admonished when I caught up to her in the entryway.

“I know, but it’s Mara, and I don’t sense a dragon is here. I can only feel magic and the evil stench of those mangy Shadow Walkers.” Alyson shivered when she mentioned the bane of our existence, the mutant wolf shifters.

“Alright, so we have at least one mage, and I think I saw him run to the backyard. Do you know how many Shadow Walkers?” She was better at sensing magical creatures than I was, but I would never tell her that. I wouldn’t want it to go to her head.

“I’m not exactly sure. I think there are at least a dozen, maybe more. There are other witches here, besides Mara.” My partner looked to me and then moved forward into the house.

“Alright, but let’s stick together, I don’t like the idea of us being separated in a fight.” I couldn’t protect her if she wasn’t close to me and right then every instinct in my body was screaming for me to protect our mate.

Alyson softly chuckled. “I know. We are a team. Teams work better when they are together. Don’t worry, I won’t let anything hurt you.” She smiled at me before she pulled her Moses Bowie knife out.

“Did I ever tell you how hot you look when you brandish that large knife?” Who was I kidding? She was always hot, even when she was covered in blood.

“Get your mind on the fight. I can’t have you thinking about me or distracting me with your flirting once we jump into the fray.” She shook her head and headed toward the kitchen.

“Right, boss. I’ll follow your lead.” I really did need to focus on what was in front of me, besides her sexy backside. I turned my head slightly, so I couldn’t see the temptation in front of me as well. Her sexy body was going to get me killed.

When we stepped into the kitchen, my demon raged forward, and I couldn’t believe how fast he took over. One second I was still in the hallway looking into the kitchen and the next I was full on demon with my new height and size standing in front of Alyson and ready to tear off the heads of the five Shadow Walkers in the room, in addition to the mage who had Mara cornered.

“I wouldn’t try anything if I were you,” the mage said as he raised his hand toward Mara.

Mara was in a corner and blood was oozing from her mouth and nose.
